To say that Anjali resembled her mother would be a massive understatement. The two women were the same in various ways, ranging from their appearance to their kindness to others. How a woman so gentle, could have given birth to a man like Arnav, Khushi would never understand.
"Aunty, par voh- aap- aapka beta pagal hai! Aunty, but he- do you- your son is a madman!" Khushi blurted out, without thinking. She yelped, clamping her hands down over her mouth.
"Khushi!" Her mother admonished sternly, and Khushi blushed, clearing her throat awkwardly. But Ratna laughed, she threw her head back and laughed, a clear high pitched sound, chiming like bells, like the trill of a mockingbird.
"Aapne sahi kaha. Pagal hi hai humare Chote. Humari galti ki saaza voh khud ko dete chale aye. You're right. My son is crazy; he kept punishing himself for my mistakes." Her face dropped, taking a tinge of sadness and Khushi, despite herself, felt a deep aching grief for this woman.
"Aapko pata hai Khushi, humne aur Chote ke pitah ne khudkhushi ki thi. Did you know Khushi, I committed suicide? Chote bas chauda saal ke the. Bache the. Arnav was only fourteen. A baby." Khushi gasped, and felt tears welling up in her eyes.
"Kaisa lagta hai jab sab kehte hain ke voh samajhte hain par koi kuch nahin samajhta?! How it feels when everyone says they understand what you're going through but no one understands anything?!"
She squeezed her eyes shut, tears streaming down her face.
"Aapne- unke saath- kyun? You- did that to him- why?" Khushi whispered, her heart bleeding for fourteen year old Arnav, left alone in the world, to support his sister and himself.
"Unke pitah ne humare saath bewafaiye ki thi. Humare saath aur kisi doosri aurat ke saath. Unhone uske saath sambandh rakhliye the. His father was unfaithful to me. Me and some other woman. He kept relations with her. Hum toot gaye the. Humne unhe apna sab kuch de diya the aur unhone humare saath aisa- I was devastated. I had given him my everything and he did this" she broke off and Khushi stared at her, a new level of understand for Arnav coming to light in her mind.
"Uske baad, voh admi apni ghatiya shakal humare bacho ko dikhane laik hi nahi rahe, aur voh bechari doosri aurat ko bhi unki asliyat pata chalgayi thi. Kahin ke nahin rahe... toh unhone bhi khudkhushi karli aur humare Chote hamesha ke liye toot gaye. After that, that man couldn't show his disgusting face to our poor children, and that poor other woman had found out his truth as well. He had nowhere to go, and so he committed suicide as well...and my poor baby closed himself off forever." Khushi felt her heart break in two as she imagined what he must have felt knowing that his father had done that.
"Humne humare Chote ko bohot kuch sehte hue dekha hai. Bohot dukh. Un mein jo badlaav ayein hain, unse sabse zyaada dukh humein hi hua hai. Humari galatiyon ki vaaje se Chote kya bangaye. I've seen my Arnav tolerate a lot. So much pain. The way he's changed has hurt me the most. It's because of my mistakes that my Arnav has become the way he is now."
"Humne unhe rote hue dekha, humare bina bade hue dekha. Apne aap ko doosro par ek bojh samajhte hue dekha. Aur humein bohot dukh hua. I saw him cry, I saw him grow. I saw him consider himself a burden to others, and it hurt me. Aapko pata hai, iss liye unhone Shantivan karidha, AR shuru kiya, crorepati bangaye. Do you know, that's why he started AR, bought Shantivan, became a millionaire. Apna karz chukane ke liye. To pay off his debt." Ratna finished, squeezing her eyes shut as tears streamed down her face.
"Arnavji - itna kuch- leken kyun? Parivaar vale toh unko bohot pyaar karte hain! Unka samhaan karte hain! Arnav- so much- but why!? The family loves him, and respects him so much!" Khushi spluttered. "Oh Arnavji," she whispered quietly, her heart aching for him.
"Kya meri maa mujhe dekh kar khush hai? Is my mother happy watching me?"
"Samhaan iss baat se hua hain ke Chote kya the, aur apne aap ko kya bana liya hain. Apni Di se itne Chote hain, leken ek maa aur pita ki tarah unhe sambhaala hai. The respect comes from what Arnav was, and what he has made himself. He's so much younger than his sister, and yet has handled her responsibility like both a mother and a father."
"Humein maloom hai ke humare Chote aapko bohot...pasand karte hain. Voh bass apne dil ki baat ko gusse ke parde ke peeche chupaiye rakhte hain. Unhe darr hain ki kahi voh aapko bhi na khodein. I know my Arnav...likes you a lot. He just keeps his feelings hidden behind a curtain of anger. He's scared that he may lose you too. So he doesn't want to bring you too close to him either."
"Humare bete ne kabhi bhi apne aap ko pyaar karne nahin diya. Akhir humne bhi unke pitah se pyaar kiya tha, aur dekhiye humara kya bangaya. Chote ko darr iss baat se nahin hai, ke koi unhe dukh ponchayega. Humare pyaare Chote ko darr iss baat ka hai ke voh kisi ko dard ponchayenge. Kisi ko voh dard denge jo unki pitah ne humein diya. My son has never let himself love. After all, I loved his father and what has become of me? Arnav isn't scared that someone will hurt him. He's scared that he will hurt someone. Give someone the pain his father gave me. He's scared that he will become his father. "
"Kya voh sach mein taare ban jate hain? Do they really become stars?"
"Leken Arnavji aise nahin hai- voh - But Arnav isn't like that! He's-"
"Yahin to aapko unhe yaad dilana hai bitya. Ki voh humare bete hain. Voh apne pitah nahin hai. That is what you must remind him darling. That he is my son. He is not his father!"
"Bitya, ab faisla aapka hai. Vaise hum to aapko apni bahooriya manne ke liye bilkul tyaar hai! Dear, now the decision is yours. By the way, I'm perfectly ready to accept you as my daughter-in-law. Bahooriya nahin, beti. Actually, not daughter-in-law, my daughter."
"Khushi bitya," her mother, who had been a silent observer before this, spoke softly, gently clasping her shoulder, "Tum jo bhi teek samjho vohi karo. Humari aur Ratna behen ki taraf se aapko koi dabaav nahin hai! Whatever you think is right, do just that! There's no pressure from me or Ratna."
"Maine socha maine tumhe kohdiya hai. I thought I lost you! Do you even know what I'm going through?"
Khushi had a decision to make.

Arnav snarled irritably at NK who was once again attempting to pry him away from Khushi's bedside.
"Nannav, you have to eat! Your diabe-"
"NO! No, NK I don't. Is Khushi eating?! Is she even fucking awake NK!?" Arnav roared furiously, standing so suddenly that the chair he had been perched on was thrown backwards.
"Nannav, I understand-"
"NO! NO NK YOU FUCKING DON'T."
"Nannav, I just wanted you to know that.... no matter what happens... I'm here for you Nannav, mere bhai. My brother. The world is full of lurve Nannav-"
"I think you mean love NK," Arnav ground out, retrieving his chair and sitting again.
"Oh no Nannav, I mean LURVE. Cause what I feel for you mere bhai, my bro, is more than love, it's LURVE."
Arnav felt a surge of laughter build within him, which was ridiculous considering the woman he lo- considering Khushi was in this state.
"NK... go away for now. Please." Arnav said, supressing his laughter and softening his tone at NK's knowing expression.
"OK mere bhai, my bro. But I'm always here for you okay?" NK smiled and walked out and Arnav rolled his eyes.
Arnav kept a watchful eye on Khushi as the clock ticked and hours went by. His hair was disarrayed from running his long fingers through it repeatedly. It happened so fast, he didn't realize.
Khushi started to thrash, making whimpering noises from under her oxygen mask, her body flaying about. Arnav surged to his feet again his hands hovering uselessly over her form as her heart monitor went haywire.
"Khushi! Khushi I'm here now, don't worry! Khushi you're safe now, I'm here. I'll protect you. Khushi! DOCTOR!" Arnav roared, sprinting out into the hall, glancing left and right anxiously.
"DOCTOR! COME QUICKLY- KHUSHI SHE'S-" The Doctor sprinted in to the room and shooed Arnav out.
"But Doctor- my- she- Khushi - I have to- I have to protect her Doctor!"
"Mr. Raizada we'll do our best to save your wife, don't worry." The nurses shooed him into the hallway and Arnav spluttered incoherently, trying to see into Khushi's hospital room.
"HAW! NANNAV AND KHUSHIJI ARE MARRIED?!" NK gasped and before he could help it Akash snorted in laughter.

It was a while later that the Doctors opened the door to Khushi's room again and Arnav sprinted forwards, followed closely by Payal, Garima, and Buaji.
"I don't know what to tell you Mr. Raizada. We don't know how to explain it."
"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. TELL ME CLEARLY DAMN IT." Arnav roared.
"She's awake Mr. Raizada."
"Hai Re Nandkisore. Kaa hum uusee milsakhat hai? Can we meet her?" Buaji gasped and the Doctor nodded.
"Sirf do lok patient se mil sakhte hain. Only two people can meet the patient." The doctor said and Arnav whipped about to stare at him.
"BHAI! BHAI WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!" Akash yelled, running into the hallway after him.
"Khushi!" Her mother admonished sternly, and Khushi blushed, clearing her throat awkwardly. But Ratna laughed, she threw her head back and laughed, a clear high pitched sound, chiming like bells, like the trill of a mockingbird.

"WHAT did you just say?"
"Er-"
"I want an answer Doctor."
"Er..." said the doctor doing a quick headcount, "ten people can go in and see the patient?"
"See, that is what I thought." Arnav said quietly. "Just making sure though."

The Raizada and Gupta families gathered around Khushi's bedside. Arnav had to strongly resist the urge to grab Khushi in a hug so tight it could possibly break the few bones in her body still intact.
"Khussee, bitya kaisi ho?" Buaji asked stroking her hair as Khushi's dark eyes slowly moved across the room and landed on Arnav.
"Hum- teek hain Buaji." She whispered, her voice throaty and husky from lack of use and Arnav felt his heartstrings being fucking yanked at as she coughed violently, and her entire form quaked.
"Bullshit." He snapped and Khushi glanced up at him, and unexpectedly her eyes filled with tears.
"What the?! Khushi- why are you crying? I'm sorry, I shouldn't have yelled at you- I just meant that you're so hurt and - oh shit, do your injuries hurt? DI, CALL THE DOCTOR!" Arnav ended in hysteria and there was silence all around the room.
"Uh... Jalebi milegi? Can I get a Jalebi?" Khushi asked quietly and the silence broke as everyone laughed.
Arnav however, got up and sprinted from the room, his movements frantic as he grabbed his blazer and took off down the hallway.
"BHAI! BHAI WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!" Akash yelled, running into the hallway after him.
"JALEBI LAANE! TO GET SOME JALEBIS!" Arnav roared loud enough for everyone to hear and everyone laughed again as Akash came back in muttering under his breath.
"Bloody psycho."
